
It is becoming increasingly common to end the day in front of a screen, seeking not entertainment, but a sense of company to ease the weight of the silence. In that loneliness, many have found unexpected comfort in chatbots: someone who always listens and seems to have the right word for every insecurity. What began as a technical tool has leaked into our private lives, transforming artificial intelligence into a constant confidant.
But that immediate comfort hides a sadder reality: we are using code to fill a void that only another person could occupy, and in that process, we are withdrawing further and further into ourselves.
Loneliness is a complex and universal human experience, but in the age of AI, it has found a new place to hide. It is no longer just about the absence of people. It is about the quality of our connections, and a growing preference for the safety of a screen over the risk of being rejected or misunderstood.
As Sherry Turkle explains in her Harvard talk, real conversation is difficult and messy; it requires a vulnerability that scares us. By taking refuge in a chatbot, we attempt to bypass the pain of being alone, but we also eliminate the possibility of true connection. We obtain a steady stream of reassurance that acts as an emotional anaesthetic, yet leaves the underlying emptiness intact once we turn off the device.
The danger is that, as we become accustomed to this companion that never contradicts us, the outside world begins to seem too exhausting, pushing us into a deeper, more permanent isolation.
This retreat into the digital world fosters a silent loneliness. By delegating our need for affection and listening to software, we are modifying our social architecture, replacing genuine exchange with an interaction that merely confirms our own ideas.
It is a form of isolation where the individual remains locked in their own room, talking to an entity that does not feel and has no life of its own. In the long run, this behaviour can leave people feeling more remote from those around them, not because AI is inherently negative, but because we need a real person on the other side to truly understand ourselves.
This reality now extends far beyond our private lives and into the corporate world. Remote work has created a paradox: employees are constantly connected to their tasks but increasingly disconnected from their peers and the corporate culture.
As chatbots and AI agents increasingly take on tasks that colleagues used to solve together, exchanging knowledge and troubleshooting side by side, the richness that comes from interacting with people, along with the sense of belonging it brings, begin to fade. An organisation is ultimately made up of people who care about one another, and that care is what makes them more likely to support each other and look out for one another's wellbeing. This isolation also makes it increasingly difficult for companies to implement policies or maintain a shared vision; it is hard to follow a culture when you are physically and emotionally adrift.
Companies need to recognise this new vulnerability.
Chatbots and AI agents, when used well, can help save time and automate routine work. What organisations must protect is the human interaction around them: there is still a great deal to learn from one another, and some of the best ideas come from working through a problem together.
That sense of connection is worth protecting: it means bringing employees back from the silence of the code and encouraging the unstructured exchanges that build true professional bonds.
Looking ahead, the task is to understand where this dependency is leading us.
As Turkle's more recent reflections suggest, the answer to loneliness will not come from a smarter bot response, but from reclaiming those spaces of real conversation where we do not have total control. Loneliness is not resolved with data; it is eased through presence.
What matters now is preventing technology from becoming the place where we shut ourselves in to escape from others, and to ensure it returns to being, simply, the means to help us find them.
